Walking

The first rains after the long, hot summer bring the landscape to life with an astonishing variety of wild flowers. From mid November until mid May or so, you’ll find the Islands green and lush. Fields are full of vegetables and waysides are carpeted with fennel, clover, wild iris, myrtle and much more. By latespring, a thousand or more species of plants will be in flower.

Away from the resorts and urban areas of central Malta, there is a surprising amount of countryside, some left almost untouched by the 20th century. Farmers often use traditional labour-intensive methods of yesteryear. Village life still centres on the agricultural and fishing seasons.

Today, as in past times, you will still see old men and women, sometimes with their extended families, working the fields. In the north of Malta, where the ground is barren, and in many parts of Gozo, you’ll come across small flocks of shaggy-coated goats and sheep being herded along wayside.

Put on walking boots, hire a mountain bike and head out from the village squares on the narrow farmers’ tracks. You’ll find yourself in a timeless landscape, quite alone even in peak season. There is plenty to discover, from ancient farmhouses and wayside chapels to spectacular seascapes.

Horse riding

The Maltese love their horses and have a long tradition of horse riding and racing. The Islands have the oldest polo club in Europe and one of the longest race tracks. Wherever you go on the Islands, you’ll see valuable trotting horses out for exercise or having a health-giving cool off in the shallows down by the harbour.

Malta horse riding

Humbler horses and ponies are still part of daily working life on some farms.

Country riding, or hacking, mostly organised during the temperate winter months, is an ideal way to explore the Maltese landscape with its views and quiet lanes.

A typical route takes you from Marsa, the Maltese centre for equestrian facilities, along to the tranquil countryside around Siggiewi before heading inland to Rabat and Buskett. Other popular areas for riding are along the north-east bays, such as Golden Bay, around Mellieha and on Gozo. Wherever you ride, you are bound to have some spectacular cliff and sea views.

Rides are available for novices and the experienced. Many schools also offer lessons and Hotels can arrange riding excursions or contact the riding centres direct.
