Malta activities: sea sportshome > activities > sea sports in MaltaWater skiingWater skiing is one of the most exhilarating ways to enjoy the sea, but youll need to take a few plunges on the way to perfecting the technique. It is another all-year-round sport in Malta. Many beachside hotels have waterskiing on offer, though do check with individual facilities if you are planning to water ski in winter months. Jet skies are available for hire at most main tourist beaches. Before hiring, please ensure you are given full safety and operational instructions and understand the maritime safety regulations.
There are no tides to worry about and you will rarely find strong currents, so you can concentrate on mastering the sport. Most beachside and lido hotels hire out boards and offer tuition. Otherwise, some beach facilities have windsurfers for hire, though not all operate out of season.
Windsurfing has become a leading all-year-round sport on the Islands.
The Islands have held some major championships over the years, the most
challenging being the Sicily to Malta Race - the worlds longest
single stretch race. Wave sailing - somersault ing on the crest of the
wave - is popular among the experts, and quite possible in winter months
when the sea is at its best for seasoned surfers.
Whether youre a young sailor just starting out or an experienced, qualified sailor, the climate and Maltas location at the centre of the Mediterranean make the Islands an excellent base for a sailing holiday. The coastline is full of craggy inlets and bays, many wonderfully secluded as they are inaccessible from land. Sailors have the privilege of mooring for a swim and then lunch on board in total solitude. Groups and experienced sailors may like to charter a yacht for an evening sail or longer trips. You could venture to the Italian islands of Sicily, Pantelleria or the Aeolian Islands. Whatever your ambitions on the sea, the Islands have a flexible range
of sailing options to suit your interests and level of experience SwimmingSwimming is the easiest way to enjoy the water, not to mention cool off and have a sociable time. Apart from the beaches, there are plenty of swimming pools and beachside resorts. All major hotels have a range of indoor, outdoor, heated, fresh- and seawater pools. Several hotels offer lidos and beach club facilities with activities, crèches, family pools and a wide range of water sports with tuition. The Islands have several public pools. A heated, Olympic-size pool is the National Pool at Tal-Qroqq. It caters for the general public and has become a favourite winter training venue for clubs and groups. Swimming lessons are available. The pool complex also offers dry-side sports and a gym. Another public pool is in southern Malta at Zonqor Point, near Marsacala.
